We had a lively class discussion following the video which raised many questions about why the vast majority of people, male AND female chose to face the female performer. parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully

Afterwards we turned to several articles that covered the May 2010 performance of Imponderabilia at MOMA New York, and discussed the differences between the older and newer work.

For homework we read the articles and worked on a set of questions that focused on Imponderabilia and Rhythm 0 that will show up again during our Socratic Seminar.

This week was significant in that we introduced the unit 4, Shock and Awe. We will be studying controversial issues and ethics in art. We will spend the next couple of weeks thinking critically about the meaning, relative worth, and ethical boundaries of work in painting, photography, sculpture, assemblage, and fashion design.

On Thursday we began to decode excerpts from Tolstoy's What is Art and engaged in conversation through Friday about his thoughts on what art is, what art is not, and the difference between good and bad art.

The Unit will culminate with a Socratic Seminar, make sure you are in class every day as this unit is very important to your grade, and really very exciting.

This week we are going to re teach some concepts that needed a little work after looking at all the Final results. Namely, perspective drawing and vocabulary development. Specifically the Principles and Elements of Art and Design.

TODAY: We had a session of peer teaching with volunteers to teach 1,2,and 3 point perspective drawing.

HW: One full page of perspective drawing. That means building buildings on top of each other, in back, in front. There should be no white space on your page. You can choose whatever mode of perspective you would like.

REMINDERS: A quiz this Friday. You need to test out of perspective drawing and sem. 1 vocab to move on to the next project.

On Thursday we worked on building the front of the face from the inside out. We started with a skull and then studied how facial muscles lay over the skull.

Homework: Use muscular handout to draw the muscles in pencil lines over the skeleton you completed in class today.

Launch: Roni Horn, Asphere, Copper. 1986-1993

This launch challenged us to consider the content of a rather simple sculptural form and look beyond the object into it's deeper meaning. We talked about Roni Horn's quote in the context of Asphere. We discussed the idea of specific "sphere" shapes as specifics that label different kinds of human beings: gender, race, religion, stereotypes. We addressed the inspiration that comes from Horn's piece: To label yourself too closely is to shut yourself off from choices and opportunities, new ideas. Roni Horn sees herself as an ambiguous human that could have many many identities and labels, and she chooses not to have any permanently stuck to her. She is a sphere without specifics. She is a human without categories. She just is.

Class work 9.3.10 Proportion and The Plumb LIne

Today we took a quiz in all classes. For some periods it was an independent testing, for some it was a class activity. The method in which the quiz was administered depended on the behavior of that week. Every Friday there will be some sort of quiz on the week's material.

Next, we covered proportion using our handout detailing a human: 7-8 heads high. Then we covered the Plumb Line:

The Plumb Line : When a person stands with his/her weight on one foot, there is a direct line from the pit of the neck down to the inside of the ankle. The Plumb Line does not exist when someone is sitting or standing with their legs apart.

Answer the following Q’s about the No Way Out article:
1.How can art change someone’s life?
2. Explain the line: “Carlos told me early on that he didn’t believe in destiny and thought life was more a matter of influence.”

Draw a still life, pet (sleeping pet), or person in a foreshortened view.
(You should not be looking right at the side of whatever you are drawing.)
This should take 40 minutes. Do several drawings.

Today we drew our hands and used each other as models to practice RESTATING and BLIND drawing. Restating is when we never lift our pen from the paper. Blind drawing is when we look at our subject continuously, never looking at the paper. Throughout this process we still used the LOOK, HOLD, DRAW technique we learned yesterday.

HOMEWORK:

30 min, draw your hand in three different positions. Elbow on the table. Have your hand about 12 inches away from your face. It should look like this: The middle position is mandatory.

Ok everyone, we have only a short time until the year is over! This is both a sad and euphoric time, especially for our seniors. However, we must keep our eyes on the finish line and finish strong.

Here are some reminders:

Seniors:
You must coordinate what day (June 3 or 4) will work for you to present your architecture project. All group members must be present.

You will not be taking a formal final exam for art. This project is your final, do what you do best and set a great example for all groups.

All students:
-Please prepare your flashcards for your presentation, you must turn these in after you present
-Please choose a presentation date, or I will place you.
-Please use your time WISELY, and consider staying after school two or three days to work on the project together. I'll have the room open until 5 each day except tomorrow (5.26).

Thank you for all your hard work, you have 1 and a half more weeks to be placed in the A.O.T. Year drawing.

LEED Categories

Remember, in order to make your project complete (and earn your A), you must have a solution for each of these LEED categories incorporated into your building design. You might not be able to show or build all these solutions and ideas but you can SPEAK about them during your presentation. I showed you examples of how I incorporated these categories into the re-designed X Arts building yesterday.

The categories are:

Sustainable Sites-(for my building I added parking for alternative transportation)

Water Efficiency-(for my building I noted that the pipes making up the structure of the building recycled the water back into the building)

Energy and Atmosphere-(I used solar panels on top of my building)

Materials and Resources-( I used recycled glass on my building)

Interior Environmental Quality-( I improved the Indoor quality by adding more windows in the student work areas).

Look at your checklist in your green folders!

Sustainable Structures

SUSTAINABLE STRUCTURES is the name of our new Architecture Project. On Monday Edmund RIvera, lead designer at Steinberg Architects in Los Angeles came to give a lecture on the concept of Architecture, Sustainability, and Responsible Design. We will be applying what we learned to create new sustainable buildings aligned with LEED guidelines for Universities and Colleges in California. Hopefully this lecture was useful to you in more ways than just being applicable to our project. Hopefully it allowed you to understand the meaning of being socially conscious in today's world as well as opening your eyes to career opportunites that build upon art, science, and mathematics.

Remember, there are three main stages of Architectural Development:

TAKING A POSITION
ARCHITECTURAL MANIFESTATIONS

All of the documents that we will be using are here and will always be under CLASS DOCUMENTS. You can also find the slide show, just download ARCHITECTURE SLIDES, I will be adding a voice feature soon.

Yesterday we reviewed how we are going to take our Watercolor Illustrations from start to finish (the regular ol' camera we usually use to post pictures is down for the count (out of batteries), so we used the camera on the Mac to take this picture). On the right is an example of the first stage of painting: a light wash of color. To the left is the second and then third stage of painting adding shadow, more color, and then using the black India Ink for detail.

Deadline this week: At the beginning of class Thursday you must have your pencil outline complete on your 22x30 and ready to paint.

As many of you know, the deadline has been extended to March 25 for the Socio-Political Watercolor Illustration Project (whew!). This is due to time, space, and the generally wanting to give all of you ample time to do your best art. I have established some deadlines that will help you manage your time.

THESE DEADLINES ARE THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENT. SOME OF YOU ARE AHEAD OF SCHEDULE. MORE POWER TO YOU. DEADLINES ARE AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS.

March 5: Sketch 100% completed and ready to transfer to 22x30 paper. All resources (images, photographs, lettering, anything that is going to be your reference) present with you in class.
March 11: Your outline drawn in 100% on your 22x30 paper ready to start painting.
March 19: Watercolor stage completed on 22x30.
March: 22-25 Black line work with India Ink.

I will be reviewing the steps (watercolor, india ink) each Monday and will be following up with you in class. A new addition will be Conference Days and Vice-Teachers which I will be talking to you about on Monday the 8th.

Going forward, if you are a ninth or tenth grader and you fail to bring your homework to class you will be given homework center. If you have your homework with you but just need to ask me some clarifying questions to finish it up in class that is fine. However, starting from scratch and attempting to finish it all during the period is not what I want to see.

Yesterday I introduced the new Sociopolitical Illustration project and handed out a guide and a sample essay. We are going to be working on a 22"x30" illustration that shows how we view a significant sociopolitical event or issue of the last decade.

There are two different schedules this week. One for period one, and another for periods 3, 4, and 5.

Period 1:

T: Computer Lab for research
W: In class essay outlines and sketching. 20 min peer editing.
TH: Political Art theme identification competition.
F: class time to work on writing, sketching, 1:1 meetings with Ms. Rivera

Period 3, 4, 5.

At the beginning of this week I talked to you about what our next project will be based on. We will be looking at socio-political issues of the last 10 years and how we can express our views on these topics through illustration and creative writing. Our first launch of the week (due to our screen malfunction) was by Ralph Steadman and sparked some good conversation in class.

First off a big shout out to Lizett Lopez for stopping by Michael’s the other day to pick up some personal watercolor sets for those who wanted them. She volunteered a few minutes out of her day and it made all the difference for me and those of you who wanted your own tubes. THANK YOU LIZETT!

Remember that today is the day you need to turn in your launches for the week if you haven’t already. Let’s maintain that shiny new “A” we were given at the start of the new semester. Additionally, Color Part I and II with the completed exit ticket is due today as well. This assignment is worth 20 points, the breakdown is as follows:

Part I: 5 points completed
Part II: 5 points completed.
Exit: 10 points (each question worth 2 points). If you do end up missing some questions on the exit ticket we will revisit the content and make sure you are up to speed.

Monday we will begin our still life practice with pencil and watercolor, using the techniques of creating value through shades and tints. Remember what you learned in Semester I and apply it here using color. I will also be introducing the next two large projects so you can begin generating ideas.
